Today, due to the way backlinks are evaluated based on different industry-related ranking factors, it is less quantity focused and more about the quality of sites from which the links are coming. SEO criteria frequently changes and becomes more difficult, so many website owners (and so-called SEO professionals) fall out of their practice claiming that SEO is dead. If a search engine recognizes cloaking it will penalize the website by permanently removing it from the search engine index. The website will no longer appear in search results. One of the first things you ’re going to need to do is to fill your site with great content and to use your keywords throughout. There’s a fine line to be walked here: you need to repeat the phrase a few times to ensure that you create that association but at the same time, you also need to make sure that you don’t overdo it and thereby appear to be spamming. The newest result isn’t always best – for less newsworthy topics, an in-depth and authoritative result that’s been around longer may outrank newer, thinner content.

Links help search engines connect the relevancy of a page with
specific keywords -- based on the keywords that are used in a
link’s anchor text. Getting third parties to link their websites to yours is a critical part of SEO. Without inbound links, there is little to no chance of ranking for competitive terms in search engines such as Google, whose algorithm relies heavily on link measuring and weighting criteria. More and more we are seeing the use of keyword clustering from sites that are making it beyond the scope of mediocre search results and traffic margins. Some SEO professionals have been predicting the demise of links for a several years. But there’s little evidence to support this trend so far. Information Architecture allows people and search engines to better understand the content structure on a site.

Find out what keywords are already bringing traffic to your website

User-generated content (UGC) sites and communities are two of my favourite places to find untapped keywords. Mobile devices have obviously exploded and Google has emphasized the optimizing websites for mobile users. By 2015 mobile search queries surpassed desktop ones – a seismic event in the evolution of search that can not be overstated in terms of significance. Optimizing for mobile devices is now nothing less than required. Its mobile-friendly ranking update came in two significant roll outs to date. A big part of effectively writing for Internet users and search engines alike is to understand the human user's psyche while also feeding the search engines the relevancy they need to consider ranking the page for a given topic. In general, though, focus on relevance above all else. It’s tempting to just shoot for the big, authoritative opportunities, but by doing so you run into a few issues. Search engine results are in a constant state of flux as rankings for individual pages and sites go up and down, outdated content fades and new pages are published. That means you'll probably notice a normal ebb and flow in your site rankings, especially if you're lower down in the results.

We've reached a tipping point

We asked an SEO Specialist, Gaz Hall, for his thoughts on the matter: "With all that said…SEO is still all about content and links. Without amazing content, you’ll never get links. And without links, you won’t crack the first page." Keyword research is still useful when trying to decide on the most interesting topics for your audience. Keywords can still be part of your content, provided that they are added in context and at the right balance. There’s no need to sacrifice the quality of your content to include more keywords, as keyword stuffing can lead to the opposite of the result you want. Internal linking is one of the few methods we can use to tell Google (and visitors) that a particular page of content is important. So how should you go about linking internally to other pages of your website?2 Many marketers will have seen a technical SEO checklist in their time. Any time a site migration is approaching or a technical audit is scheduled, a checklist tends to appear. Contextual link building -- links that are surrounded by text in the body of content -- have a higher SEO value than links that appear in the footer or sidebar.

Duplicate content causes problems

Even just a few changes will have a significant impact on your website’s ranking. Don’t forget – it will still take time to see your hard work come to fruition! Don’t let ego fuel your obsession with keyword rankings. And remember that your personal search experience is not necessarily what your prospective customers see. Troubleshooting technical errors and ensuring that your
website is always accessible is one of the biggest hurdles to
manage when thinking about good SEO practices over time. Would you rather read 5 articles about one subject, or one or two well thought articles with significant amounts of data or thought process to back them up? Google knows that if a page takes too long to load, visitors are
likely to click away or go back. Now, Google tends to place
other factors above site speed, but while it’s not the number
one factor, if your site loads slowly it’s definitely something
you will want to address.

Add Modifiers to Title

To ensure consistently high quality, business owners and digital marketers need to adopt a long-term content strategy that boosts a website’s search engine ranking and keeps it there. Good content plays a crucial role here. You may not be familiar with Schema mark-up, however it’s increasingly important and can do wonders for certain site’s visibility. The key is to consistently deliver value so that people come to your site for answers. And this is also ironically what will get other good sites to link to your site. This is the perfect example of ‘emergent SEO’. If you don’t know where to submit a guest blog post or what forums would be good to participate on, research where your competitors are going to get links and follow suit. Getting high-quality links from outside websites is key — especially if you can find a way to get .edu links. Google sees inbound links coming from websites ending in .edu as especially trustworthy.
